Kep crab and Kampot pepper: planning a memorable seafood meal
Kep’s signature plate joins the coast to the pepper-growing countryside. Learn how to order it, what to eat alongside it and when a market meal or resort restaurant suits the occasion.

Crab with Kampot pepper is central to Kep’s culinary identity. The government’s coastal development material also identifies squid, shrimp, fish and dried seafood among the area’s products. The attraction is the meeting of a fishing coast and a celebrated agricultural region. A plate with green peppercorns offers a different experience from simply adding ground pepper at the table: ask the cook how the dish is prepared and what is available that day.
At the Crab Market, clarify the complete order
Psar Kdam, usually called the Crab Market, is the obvious area to explore for a seafood meal. Before choosing, look at the current menu and ask whether prices are per portion, per piece or by weight. If seafood is weighed, agree the quantity and cooking method before it goes to the kitchen. Establish whether rice, vegetables and preparation are included. The same budget can produce very different meals depending on size and accompaniments; a large-looking platter is not a reliable comparison on its own.
Build a meal that everyone can enjoy
Order pepper crab as a shared centrepiece and add a simpler dish, vegetables and rice to vary the texture and flavour. Shell-on crab is leisurely eating; ask for the tools and hand-washing arrangements you need. For children or anyone who finds shellfish awkward, a fish or non-seafood option may make the table more relaxed. State allergies clearly before ordering. If someone wants milder food, ask about chilli separately from pepper: the two seasonings should not be treated as the same ingredient.
A more structured coastal meal: Kep West
Kep West advertises dining experiences, including options for private tables and groups. It is worth comparing for an occasion where reservations, seating and the overall setting matter as much as the plate. Confirm which venue within the property is taking bookings and whether non-resident diners can use the facilities you have in mind. A celebratory dinner and a casual market lunch can both belong in the same stay without competing for the same role.
Gardens, shade and a different pace
The Secret Restaurant at Veranda Natural Resort provides another setting to investigate, with the property also advertising a bakery. Samanea identifies Chankiri Kitchen & Bar beside its pool and garden areas. These options can be useful when a group wants a quieter break, a wider meal structure or shelter from unsettled weather. Ask whether a table reservation is sufficient for your plans; restaurant access does not automatically include swimming or other hotel facilities.
Bring the flavour home thoughtfully
A pepper purchase after a meal gives you a practical reason to compare fresh, dried and preserved forms. Tell the seller what you enjoyed eating and ask which preparation is appropriate for your kitchen. Photograph the label rather than relying on a bag with no producer information. Seafood is more complicated to transport and store than dried pepper, so buy it with a clear plan for cooking and refrigeration. For a short visitor, enjoying the dish in Kep can be the better souvenir than carrying fragile ingredients through the rest of Cambodia.
