Kratie: town rooms, Koh Trong retreats and the Mekong dolphins

Kratie offers three distinct ways to stay by the Mekong: a convenient room in town, a river-island retreat on Koh Trong, or a separate countryside stop at Chhlong. The best choice depends on how often you want to move.

In Cambodia

Town is the simplest base

Staying in Kratie itself keeps arrival, meals and onward travel relatively straightforward. Le Tonlé is a named riverfront guesthouse and restaurant with published double, twin, family and dormitory options. Its operator connects the business with community and environmental work. Compare the actual room category: a river-facing balcony and an interior or side-facing room are not equivalent experiences. A town base works well if you are arriving late, leaving early or planning one organised excursion while keeping the rest of your time flexible.

Koh Trong changes the pace

Soriyabori Resort, often encountered in older material as Rajabori, is on Koh Trong opposite Kratie. The current Terres Rouges Collection site provides arrival instructions and confirms the island location. Reaching your room involves the river crossing and a further island transfer; the landing arrangements vary with water level. Arrange this with the property, especially with large luggage or children, and aim to arrive in daylight. The attraction is a slower island stay, with time to look at village life and cultivation rather than crossing back to town for every meal.

Chhlong is another destination

Le Relais de Chhlong occupies a restored riverside period mansion in Chhlong, a separate town in Kratie province. The operator lists suites, a restaurant and a pool. This can be a satisfying stop for travellers interested in a quiet riverside stay and architecture, but it should not be presented as a central Kratie hotel. Map the extra journeys before combining it with dolphin watching or an early bus connection. For a short trip, choose the setting you want most rather than changing rooms each night simply to sample every option.

Observe dolphins without treating them as an appointment

The Kampi area north of Kratie is associated with Irrawaddy dolphin watching. WWF describes conservation work along the river habitat between Kratie and Stung Treng. A wildlife outing remains a search for free-living animals, with no responsible guarantee of a sighting. Choose an operator who explains the river conditions, boat arrangements and how disturbance is avoided. Ask for suitable life jackets before departure. If considering kayaking, discuss the route and your experience honestly; an appealing photograph cannot tell you how demanding the day will be.

Build a stay around the river

Two or three nights leave space for a dolphin excursion, a town evening and Koh Trong without making every transfer urgent. Early and late light can make ordinary time on the waterfront as memorable as an organised activity. Keep meals and small purchases in the plan: a local breakfast, seasonal fruit or a drink after the journey gives more shape to the stay than another distant stop. Travellers continuing to Stung Treng, Banlung or Sen Monorom should reconfirm the actual service and arrival point. Secure island-to-mainland transport before booking a departure that depends on a very early crossing.
