UNESCO lists Battambang in its Creative Cities Network for gastronomy, with membership dating from 2023. This recognition is about the cityโs creative food culture. It is not a restaurant rating or a guarantee about every food tour. Use it as an invitation to learn about ingredients, producers and everyday cooking. It also helps avoid confusing the designation with a UNESCO World Heritage listing, which is a different programme.
Pick one learning question
A food day becomes more memorable when it has a subject. You might ask how a rice-based product is prepared, how a family business organises its work, or what makes a familiar dish vary between cooks. Start with one question rather than a checklist of everything to taste. If you book a guide, explain that you want conversation and context, not only a sequence of photo stops. Ask whether interpretation is included in your preferred language.
Separate a market visit from a cooking class
These are different purchases. A market visit may involve walking and explanation without a meal. A cooking activity may involve preparation, a demonstration, a shared table or some combination. Before agreeing on a price, establish the duration, what you will actually do, the number of participants and which ingredients or meals are included. For dietary requirements, communicate specific ingredients and ask the organiser what they can reliably accommodate. Do not assume that a translated dish name answers the question.
Leave time for the people working
A stallholder or producer may be busy with ordinary customers. Ask before photographing a person or a preparation space and accept a refusal. If a visit includes a demonstration, find out whether the host is paid for their time. Buying a product can support the maker, but it should not be treated as an automatic obligation to accept photographs or a guarantee of community benefit. Keep personal conversations out of public captions unless permission is clear.
Keep the evening simple
After a substantial daytime activity, leave the evening meal flexible. Save the name of a dish or ingredient you liked and use it to continue the conversation with your next host. Record what you paid and what was included so a future recommendation can be specific. Our publication is developing local contacts, but no unnamed cooking school or agency is presented here as a contracted partner.
