Local hosts and referrals: make the booking relationship clear

Help travellers understand who provides the room or ride, who receives payment and whether an introduction earns a commission.

Official context · practical booking questions

Booking.com’s official pages establish the distinction between publisher affiliation and property registration. The local referral workflow is editorial guidance, not evidence of an accepted affiliate account, signed owner agreement, commission rate or donation commitment.

Give a small business a clear identity

A local owner can make an offer easier to trust by describing the actual service: a named guesthouse, a particular apartment, a villa, a bicycle rental or a transfer. Include the business contact, the person answering requests, the location and the details that can be confirmed for specific dates. Use photographs with permission and describe limitations as clearly as amenities. A small number of accurate listings is more useful than a large catalogue whose availability nobody manages.

Keep three relationships separate

A direct introduction connects a traveller with a local provider. An affiliate link can remunerate the publisher when a qualifying booking follows that link. Listing a property on a booking platform is a separate owner process. Booking.com publishes one route for its affiliate programme and another for registering accommodation. The presence of those official resources here does not mean this publication or any local business has been accepted into either programme.

Agree the referral arrangement in writing

Before an owner accepts referred requests, clarify who sends the quote, who confirms the service and who handles changes. If a commission applies, agree its basis, when it becomes due and how cancellations affect it. There is no assumed commission rate. Travellers should be told when a recommendation or link can remunerate the publisher, and any charge they must pay should be visible before commitment. A source citation by itself is not a commercial endorsement.

Leave the owner in control of the offer

Ask the owner to confirm dates, room or vehicle type, included services and the validity period of each quote. If the request is unavailable, obtain permission before suggesting a different property or operator. A host’s contact details should not be copied into public material without agreement. Keep only the enquiry information necessary to prepare the offer; identity documents and payment details belong in an appropriate provider process when they are actually needed.

Make the local benefit concrete

A useful relationship can bring a host better specified requests and give the visitor one readable record of the arrangement. It should not promise a level of income or imply that every booking funds a community project. In Cambodia is rooted in Battambang and has a related KKB project; any contribution connected with a booking needs its own explicit explanation. Use the reservation enquiry to start a conversation, then rely on the provider’s written confirmation.
