Cambodia’s important cities: tourism and the working economy
Compare Cambodia’s cities by what they do: capital services, tourism, ports, border industry and Battambang’s agricultural and cultural connections.
UpdatedAn editorial comparison of city roles, not a statistical league table. CDC and port sources support economic context; no current city GDP, investment return or border availability is inferred.

Battambang is InCambodia’s starting point because the project is based there and is building local connections. That editorial choice is different from claiming the city is Cambodia’s largest economy. The Council for the Development of Cambodia’s 2023 investment handbook describes Battambang province’s agricultural role, including rice and other crops. A market visit, a food workshop and a countryside journey can therefore be read as parts of a working regional economy, as well as visitor experiences. Ask producers what they grow and make rather than assuming everything sold locally originated nearby.
Phnom Penh and Siem Reap serve different purposes
Phnom Penh is the capital and a base for government, business meetings and urban services. Siem Reap is the principal visitor base for Angkor. Their importance is not directly comparable: an administrative appointment, an archaeological visit and a search for local craft production generate different routes and spending. Choose the number of nights around those tasks. Staying longer in fewer places can leave more time for a guide, a workshop or an independently arranged meeting instead of repeated check-ins.
Sihanoukville connects tourism with freight
The Sihanoukville Autonomous Port describes its role as a major deep-sea gateway to Cambodia. The CDC also places the city within an industrial and transport network. This explains why Sihanoukville is more than a departure point for islands: port traffic and supply chains are part of its identity. Port facilities are operational infrastructure, not automatically tourist attractions. Compare a mainland stay, an island transfer and a business visit as separate travel products, with separate timing and access needs.
Bavet and Poipet show the border economy
Bavet links the eastern corridor with Vietnam; Poipet’s location ties it to Thailand. The CDC documents special economic zones and industrial activity in these areas. Their commercial role should not be mistaken for a promise that every border journey is currently possible. The dedicated border guide carries the dated access checks. A special economic zone concerns investment and administration; it is not a general exemption from Cambodian law or an automatic authorisation for casino operations.
Let the purpose shape the itinerary
For a first cultural trip, Battambang, Siem Reap and Phnom Penh offer contrasting bases. For economic reporting or supplier research, industrial towns and transport centres may matter more, but access should be arranged in advance. This is a practical editorial comparison, not a ranking by GDP, population or future investment returns. InCambodia prioritises clearly described local experiences; Kun Khmer training, arts and food can help a visitor meet the country through people and their work, alongside its better-known landmarks.
