Thailand: a dated closure check

On 4 October 2026, UK FCDO and Australian DFAT advice continued to report closed or suspended Cambodia–Thailand land crossings. The two governments also maintain travel warnings for different distances from the frontier. An old Bangkok–Poipet–Siem Reap itinerary should therefore not be used as a current booking plan. Read the latest advisory and official immigration information before departure; do not infer reopening from a ticket advertisement or an undated travel post.

Border provinces are not single destinations

A province can extend far from its international boundary. The name Battambang on a provincial warning should not be interpreted as a precise description of every street in Battambang city, nor should a city visit be used to dismiss restrictions nearer the frontier. Check the actual route, including stops and side trips, against the advisory’s map and wording. The same care is needed for mountain temples and remote roads. Avoid reducing a geographic warning to either everything closed or everything safe.

For Vietnam or Laos, identify the checkpoint first

Ask your carrier for the named crossing before arranging visas or onward accommodation. Check the entry rules for each country, your nationality and your travel document. A visa valid for an airport arrival may have conditions relevant to a land entry point, and a Cambodian document does not settle admission to the neighbouring country. This guide does not publish a blanket list of currently open checkpoints; the practical question is whether your specific journey is accepted on your intended date.

Keep visa guidance tied to the traveller

Government travel advice often addresses its own citizens. For example, the UK’s Cambodia entry page is explicitly for British passport holders, and discusses passport validity, visitor visas and arrival formalities. Do not copy those instructions across every nationality. Use Cambodia’s official e-visa and immigration channels, or a Cambodian embassy, for the decision relevant to your passport. An electronic arrival declaration and a visa are different documents; check which are required for your mode of arrival rather than assuming one replaces the other.

Build a flexible onward day

Once entry and crossing status are confirmed, ask where you leave the vehicle, how luggage is handled, where the next vehicle departs and what happens if processing is delayed. Keep the first night flexible where possible. If a land route is unavailable, compare a permitted air arrival followed by domestic transport instead of trying to improvise a detour at the border. Battambang can remain the centre of a Cambodia itinerary without making the whole trip depend on one frontier. Recheck transport and weather close to departure, and keep a copy of the carrier’s cancellation terms.
