🏝️ Two islands, several different stays

Koh Rong and Koh Rong Sanloem are separate destinations off the Sihanoukville coast. Transport operators serve named landing points, so a booking that says only island transfer leaves an important question unanswered. GTVC publishes destination information for both islands. Use the exact location supplied by your accommodation when asking a carrier about transport. Similar spellings such as Sanloem and Samloem can occur, but that does not make every pier or beach on that island equivalent.

Choose the beach before choosing the room

Start with the experience you want: easy arrival, a quieter stay, access to several meal options or a specific activity. Then ask each accommodation how you reach it from the actual arrival pier. Is another boat, vehicle or walk necessary, and who arranges it? Photos of the beach do not answer those questions. If anyone in your group has limited mobility, ask specifically about boarding, steps, sand and the path to the room rather than accepting a general claim of easy access.

Check the everyday essentials

Ask about electricity, drinking water, payment options, mobile reception and the availability of meals before committing to a remote setting. Confirm any requirement to bring cash and keep an emergency reserve without assuming an ATM will be convenient. Find out what assistance the property can arrange if someone needs to leave early. These practical details determine whether a peaceful stay feels comfortable; they should be confirmed for the particular property instead of inferred from the island’s overall reputation.

Plan a stay, not a race between beaches

For a first island visit, choose one base and leave time to use it. Two or three nights can offer more flexibility than a single overnight between long journeys. If you want a second island, ask about the actual connection rather than drawing a short line across a map. Excursions should have clear return arrangements and suitable equipment. Snorkelling visibility, swimming conditions and night-time natural phenomena cannot be guaranteed simply because they appear in a brochure.

Make the return as clear as the arrival

Before departure from the mainland, establish how your return ticket is confirmed, which pier it uses and whom to contact if conditions change. Weather can affect boats, so protect onward flights and important appointments with a realistic buffer. Keep booking details accessible offline. A well-arranged island break can complement a culturally rich Battambang or Siem Reap stay, but it should remain a separate travel block, with enough time for the sea journey at both ends.
