Phnom Sampeau: bats, a hilltop visit and a place of remembrance

Phnom Sampeau, also written Phnom Sampov or Sampeou, is a limestone hill southwest of Battambang. Destination sources identify pagodas, caves, viewpoints and the bat emergence. The site also contains a memorial to victims of Khmer Rouge killings. These features share a place, but they are not interchangeable attractions. Tell your guide whether you want the hill, the memorial, the bats or a combination. Someone expecting only to watch wildlife should not be taken into a difficult memorial visit without explanation.
Treat the memorial as remembrance
The killing-cave memorial concerns real victims and survivors. Keep voices low, follow local instructions and decide whether photography is appropriate before raising a camera. Ask a guide for historical context rather than dramatic stories designed to shock. Families can ask in advance what will be visible and decide which parts children should enter. It is entirely reasonable for a traveller to skip the memorial while others visit; arrange a clear, suitable meeting point without turning the decision into a debate.
Watch the bats without a stopwatch
The departure of bats from the cave is associated with dusk. Wildlife is not a scheduled performance, so we do not publish a guaranteed minute, duration or animal count. Ask where visitors are currently allowed to wait and keep the cave entrance and local access routes clear. Observe from the designated public area. Do not enter wildlife roosts, feed or handle animals, or use a drone to follow them. Binoculars or a camera zoom let you look more closely without approaching the cave.
Decide how much climbing you want
The hill visit and the lower bat-viewing area require different amounts of effort. Ask about the precise walking section, available transport, surfaces and steps; do not accept a vague promise that the outing is easy for everyone. Wear shoes suitable for the route and leave time to descend before your planned observation. Stay on established visitor paths and respect any closed sections. A viewpoint is optional, and changing the plan because of rain, tiredness or access restrictions should not spoil the rest of the visit.
Arrange the return before the evening
Agree on a return pickup point that both you and the driver can identify after dark. Save the driver's contact and check whether waiting is included. If you also want to attend a Phare performance, confirm the show time and the transfer before buying both; an evening cave visit and a performance may compete for the same hours. Consider placing them on different nights so neither experience becomes a hurried stop. This guide concerns the named visitor site, not permission to explore unfamiliar hills or border areas.
