Sihanoukville: plan the mainland gateway to Cambodia’s islands

Sihanoukville is the coastal city used for many journeys to Koh Rong and Koh Rong Sanloem. A well-chosen overnight stop, the correct pier and a realistic connection can make the island part of a trip much easier.

First, use the correct city name

Sihanoukville, also known as Preah Sihanouk or Kampong Som, is on Cambodia’s coast. Siem Reap is the inland city beside Angkor. They are different destinations: booking a room or a transfer with the wrong city selected is a costly mistake. Sihanoukville is a working port and an urban beach destination, not simply a preserved fishing village. Approach it as a place with distinct neighbourhoods and practical services, then decide how much time you want to spend here.

Book the island landing before the mainland transfer

A ticket labelled Koh Rong is not enough information. Koh Touch, Long Set and Sok San serve different parts of Koh Rong; Saracen Bay and M’Pai Bay are on Koh Rong Sanloem. Send the accommodation name to the ferry company and obtain the exact arrival pier in writing. Then ask the hotel whether you will walk, ride or take a second boat. Travellers carrying wheelchairs, pushchairs or large suitcases should request photographs of the landing and the last section of the route.

Choose the overnight stop for its purpose

When the onward flight matters, return to the mainland in advance and use the spare time for a meal, laundry or a comfortable final night. A quoted crossing duration is not the whole door-to-door journey.

Give the mainland its own small itinerary

With a full day, choose one beach area and one excursion instead of criss-crossing the city. Sihanoukville need not be treated as the only imaginable island gateway: routes elsewhere on the coast can change.
