Choose a base with a purpose

A room is also a decision about daily travel. In Battambang, compare a central guesthouse with a quieter property outside the heritage streets. In Phnom Penh, a business appointment, family visit or short sightseeing stay may suggest different neighbourhoods. For Siem Reap, consider time in the town as well as temple departures. A property that suits an early start may not be the best choice for someone who wants to walk out for dinner each evening.

Read the actual room description

Hotel, hostel, guesthouse and resort describe broad formats. They do not tell you whether a particular room has a private bathroom, window, lift access or the cooling arrangement you expect. Ask about the exact booked category, not only photographs of the property’s best room. A pool shown in a listing may have access hours or age conditions. For an apartment, confirm whether the kitchen is equipped for cooking rather than simply containing a kettle.

For longer stays, compare a whole month

Add utilities, cleaning, laundry, transport and any deposit to the headline rent. Ask who pays for repairs and how meter readings are recorded. Check the arrival condition together and retain a written handover. A villa can be sensible for a group but expensive for a couple if transport is needed for every meal. Request a short initial stay or viewing before a long commitment where possible; photographs cannot answer every question about noise or everyday access.

Treat island accommodation as a journey

On Koh Rong and Koh Rong Sanloem, the beach and arrival pier matter as much as the room. Ask which boat service and landing point the property recommends for your dates, whether a final transfer is necessary and who arranges it. Include weather disruption in the cancellation discussion. A quiet beach is appealing, but check food options, luggage handling and onward transport before booking a non-refundable flight immediately after an island night.

Use the directories to build a shortlist

Our Battambang and Phnom Penh guides name properties using their published information; they do not claim a recent room inspection or negotiated allocation. Compare the same dates, guests and cancellation terms with each provider. If you send an accommodation enquiry through InCambodia, it is a request for assistance, not an instant reservation. Any future paid introduction must identify the provider and explain the commercial relationship before you decide.
