Cambodia cities: where to go and why
Choose Cambodia’s cities by the trip you want: Battambang, Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, the coast and the Mekong, with separate economic and border guides.
UpdatedThe sources support the named institutions and practices. Suggested combinations and questions are editorial guidance, not a first-hand review or a confirmed booking.

An important city for industry is not automatically the best place for your next holiday night. Likewise, a small town can deserve several days if it matches your interests. This destination overview separates those questions. Use Battambang for our main local focus, then add the cities that bring something different to your route. The destination and economic guides explain the individual places; there is no unsupported ranking of which is Cambodia’s second or third largest city.
Battambang: make it a base
Our starting point is a stay built around Battambang’s city life, nearby temples, arts and Kun Khmer. The two bamboo-train locations need different descriptions, so choose the experience deliberately instead of booking only by the name. UNESCO identifies Battambang as a Creative City of Gastronomy, a useful prompt to look at food and the work behind it. Give a confirmed KKB visit its own space in the plan rather than squeezing it between unrelated excursions.
Phnom Penh and Siem Reap: different reasons to stay
Phnom Penh adds capital-city institutions, contemporary life and cultural collections. Siem Reap is the main visitor base for Angkor, with its own arts and hospitality scene beyond temple visits. Do not treat their museums, memorials, archaeological places and evening activities as interchangeable. Choose one substantial purpose for a day, then use the city-specific guide to add a manageable second activity. Historical memorial visits also deserve time for reflection.
The coast: towns, a port and separate islands
Kampot, Kep and Sihanoukville should not be compressed into a single beach label. Their guides distinguish a river-town stay, a smaller coastal stop and a city with a port and island connections. Koh Rong and Koh Rong Sanloem are separate islands, and the arrival pier matters when booking accommodation. Set aside a transfer block, especially when a boat and an onward intercity booking would otherwise depend on one another.
Central Cambodia and the Mekong: follow an interest
Consider Kampong Cham for a riverside stop, Kampong Thom for access to Sambor Prei Kuk, or Kampong Chhnang for pottery and lake-side context. Kratie and Stung Treng open different sections of the Mekong story; Banlung and Sen Monorom introduce the northeast through distinct provincial bases. These are options to investigate, not a recommendation to include every place. A short trip benefits from fewer changes of accommodation.
Separate border research from a holiday route
Poipet and Bavet matter to trade and border activity, but their role is not a guarantee of an open crossing or a reason to book a casino excursion. Our dated border guide explains the current Cambodia–Thailand restrictions. Check immigration and your government’s advice before connecting countries. A Pattaya provides a related Thailand planning resource; it does not confirm that an overland journey from Battambang is operating.
Build the route from usable days
Count arrival and departure constraints first. Choose two or three bases that fit the time left, write one reason for each, and leave a flexible day where a missed connection would hurt most. A separate trip-budget planner combines your actual quotes. You can then spend more of the visit with local guides, cooks, artists or coaches, and less time repeatedly packing for the next city.
